![]() ![]() Franz became weak again, he even resigned from his church and became an atheist, he practically gave up on life. I was so disappointed in Franz when he found out that Alex died, he began drinking again. ![]() Alex and Franz did however stay in touch through mail where Alex continuously tried to get Franz to set out and travel himself. He always prayed for the best of Alex when he didn’t know his exact destination. You could tell how genuine of a person that Franz was by the way he cared for Alex. “It was a very hard thing for me to do,” Franz explains as he dropped Alex off in San Diego. Franz tried to convince Alex as much as he could but Alex was dead set on his travels. Franz picked up Alex in Salton, California where they got to swapping old stories. It really made me step back and think how much pain he may have still been in if he had to fill the void by buying love and company from children who probably don’t even appreciate all of his help. Franz then started “adopting” Okinawan boys and girls and taking them under his wing and paying for their schooling. “Six months later he managed to pull himself together and quit drinking, cold turkey…” I admired Franz for this because alcoholism is a serious condition and it takes a lot of will power and mental discipline to just quit cold turkey. Franz’s wife and kids were killed by a drunk driver when he was overseas and then he began hitting the whiskey hard. Franz is an eighty-year-old retired veteran who gave McCandless a ride from Salton City, California, to Grand Junction, Colorado. Both my family and my friends have encouraged me and helped lead me in my faith in Christ, which has shaped in many ways the way that I live.In chapter 6, Alex meets an old man named Ronald Franz. My friends have also taught me a good deal, especially in the way of grace, mercy, and kindness. I have perceived things apart from what they have taught me, but they laid the foundation for most of what I believe and hope for. They have taught me much of what I know of healthy relationships, love, hard work, fairness, hope, and perseverance. Much of the way in which I perceive the world is reflective of my parents' view of the world because of my closeness to them. My life, and especially my values have been deeply influenced by my relationships, especially with my family and friends. In this way, Chris's impact on Franz was not good. By the time Krakauer reaches the end of his description of Franz's part in Chris's story, the reader is given the impression that Franz has pulled inside himself and is unable to see much hope in what remains of his life. However, once Chris was gone, Franz was left empty, and he became even further separated from society than he already had been, causing him to be more alone. In a way, while it lasted, this impact seemed good, as it seemed to give Franz joy. How exactly this came about is not entirely clear, but it was most likely due to the conversations they had and Franz's lack of family remaining. ![]() During Chris's time living near Salton Sea, he and Franz seem to have bonded, and Franz grew especially attached to him. He had lost both his wife and his son much earlier, and while he had spent time fostering Okinawan children he was alone when he met Chris (or Alex, as Franz knew him). Chris's impact on Franz seems to have been in part due to the fact that Franz was old and lonely. Krakauer wrote on page 48 that "no one was affected more powerfully by his or her brief contact with the boy than Ronald Franz." Why did Chris have such a powerful impact on Franz? Do you think this was a positive or negative effect? How has your life or values been influenced by relationships with others?Ģ. Thank you." To Chris McCandless, what did it mean to pursue happiness? What does the pursuit of happiness mean to you?Ģ. On page 37, we see an entry from Chris's journal which reads, "God it is great to be alive. In addition, please respond to one of the following prompts as a comment to this post.ġ. We will begin reading chapters 6 & 7, and what we do not finish in class will be homework. All of this will help us understand Chris McCandless better, and hopefully, help us understand the ideas presented in this book better. This will be an ongoing task - as you encounter new references, you will add them to the list. Then, working individually or in pairs, you will do some research to determine the significance of those references. First, we will work together to develop a list of the references encountered to this point in the book. Today, we will continue to investigate the many allusions made in the text. ![]()
